If you don't have the means you might should reconsider if you are ready for marriage.

Spending mom and dad's money doesn't prepare one for real life.

I’m just trying to gauge if the sentiment about this cultural norm has shifted. 30 - 40 years ago, for sure, it was earlier marraige with parents helping out with the wedding. I’m guessing that tradition is no longer around?

Its most definitely changed. Do what's best. I wouldn't rely on anyone as a grown adult.

Problem is back in the day young people respected parents paying for a wedding. They didn't try to out do their feiends on social media and try to break the bank on their parents.

My DIL made her father drop 40k on her wedding. Sure we paid for the rehearsal dinner and and honeymoon accommodations. But she needed a foot in her arse for making her father drop that kind of money.

We paid for most of ours. My grandfather paid for the food and wine/liquor and let us use his ranch as our venue.

My wife and I paid for the vast majority of our wedding. We had the means, although we did have to sacrifice a lot, and her parents are putting three kids through HS/college. Frankly, weddings are so expensive nowadays that I can't blame anyone for putting priorities elsewhere.

It was, however, irritating when my MIL started complaining about champagne over prosecco (I'm not making this up).

Oh so you’re the storm the beach of Destin wedding! Get dad to drop 300k on a wedding in college debt when you could have a small, cheap ceremony and buy a house.
