Nash was the go-to best TV weatherman in my life. He was not a talking head, he was a professional meteorologist first and foremost.

He whiffed like every met with every type of storm back then. The difference now is that the standard has been set so high. Nash Roberts, and all the rest during those days, operated under much lower expectations. Now? If they "miss" by twenty miles, or if your neighborhood doesn't get hit by a tornado they're going to catch shite.

ETA: It also helps that Nash didn't have to deal with every Tom and hairy dick with a computer tracking the centerline of a storm at street level two-three days out from landfall. They just tuned in at 6, 12, and 10 to see where he put the dot and that was enough.

I saw Nash at a Scweggman's back in the late 80s. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly

Nash making Bob Breck melt down on air was one of the funniest things I ever saw. Funnier still because Nash was right when he called the wobble to Mississippi.

Bob had to go back on air and explain why it didn’t matter that Nash was right because everyone should just repeat the official forecast.

At the time, my family seemed to believe he was above average as a weatherman but certainly not on the level of a weather gawd with a grease pencil LOL
