They were well-off by Corsican standards but not by the standards of the French. Corsica was a very poor island in the mid-18th century and the Buonpartes were doing okay relatively speaking - at least until their father died in 1785. Once that happened they were practically destitute and relied on Napoleon's meager salary to take care of themselves and pay off their father's debts. His rise to prominence after the Siege of Toulon in 1793 was a godsend for them.

Yet…. We have so many gullible people that actually believe that the history they study is the actual truth.
