Even if you had a big arse fan emulating wind resistance on the treadmill, that resistance wouldnt be 10 feet above where you took off, therefore you drop like a rock because you still havent achieved the speed neccessary to fly. That sound right?

If it is all about lift and wind velocity (not ground velocity), then would a parked plane take off in a hurricane if there is a constant head wind of 100mph or so?

Assume the airfoils are properly placed.

If a plane is traveling at takeoff speed on a conveyor belt, and the belt is matching that speed in the opposite direction, can the plane take off?

They need to clarify this. I take this to mean it is setup like me walking on a treadmill. If so, then the plane can't lift off.

so you are saying a plane without a vertical propultion system can take off without moving forward?

The problem some had before with this was that if this mythical conveyor belt could spin as fast as the wheels (created by the propulsion from the jets), the plane would not move. That's why with this example, if the plane is "travelling at takeoff speed" then it will fly.

Yes, the first time I saw this 'problem' on the OT whoever asked it said that the treadmill was matching the speed of the wheels, as opposed to the plane's takeoff speed. In that case, it would be impossible to take off... it would be just like if the plane had a huge chain holding it to a mountain... it can't move, it can't take off.

In this case, the plane is free to move, so of course it takes off. The wheels are just working double-time because the treadmill/runway is moving in the opposite direction.

of course not, are you saying a plane that's on a treadwill WON'T move forward?

after 17 pages have you men figured this out or not?

i thought there were a lot of engineers on here. guess they are all at lunch still.

I'm talking about the impossible scenario where the treadmill matches the wheel speed... which is of course impossible because the wheels and treadmill would accelerate to infinity.

no i didn't.

i said if plane move it takes off.
if it doesn't move it doesn't take off.

i even kept it simple for you.

the jet moves reguardless if there is no physical resistance to the body of the plane.

the speed of the wheels and the conveyor belt would just have to gradually increase together until the plane takes off.

right. but the plane would move, the wheels and conveyor belt would just destroy themselves. The plane would still take off.
