I will give our drill sarge this much though. He told us before going on our first road march to go to the PX and buy a pair of women's pantyhose and cut them off at the knees. These things saved a lot of chaffing and rawness for those of us who took his advice. After a few miles you could tell the one's who didn't because they were all walking bowlegged.

Company Commanders in the Navy told us to buy knee highs, but also told us if we got busted wearing them we were on our own.

If I remember right, we had three road marches. First was 5, then 10, then the last was 20. Each one came towards the end of each "phase" of our training. Do they still do it that way?

Knee highs? What for? The cutoff pantyhose was to protect our upper areas, not the other way around.
Or is that one of those "Navy things"?

I've never worn them on a hike either. But I have worn them on a road march in full battle gear and weapon though. And I was damn glad to have them.
