there’s a liability piece in this too. Having a published policy with clear guidance (even if not mandated) in my opinion is smart if something we’re to happen (contact tracing, claiming COVID contracted in your place of business). I completely understand and tend to agree with more hard lines mask policies at businesses, even if not from government mandates.

The mask stuff is annoying, but think about the business risks with completely ignoring what’s going on and potential liability. Many of us are already set back; you don’t think we are tired of the crap? People not getting out? Businesses requiring masks is not virtue signaling, it is just navigating uncertainty to ensure future viability.
