May 14, 1943 - The End of the War in Africa

In this, the 194th week since Germany invaded Poland, Axis forces finally capitulate in North Africa after nearly three years of fighting there. 250,000 German and Italian soldiers are taken prisoner. The Allies lay out the basic framework for Operation Husky - the upcoming invasion of Sicily - while they continue to have disagreements on where to go next and when to invade France. Meanwhile, in the Far East, Japanese forces continue to hinder British Commonwealth forces in Burma while they also continue to launch an offensive in the Hubei Province of China against the Chinese Nationalist Army. U.S. forces are launching offensives of their own against the Japanese, however, with the beginning of an operation to take back the islands of Kiska and Attu in the Aleutians. Finally, in the Soviet Union, Russian forces call a halt to their offensive in the Kuban as the German 17th Army continues to stubbornly hold out against a multitude of Red Army attacks.
