You’re getting the same resistance over that question now, that people exhibited over the .08 BAC because it’s commonplace for people to do it.

People know texting and driving is dangerous but people generally grossly overestimate their driving ability while underestimating the dangers of their actions because they do it so much. Thus, you get avoidance of the question because then people would be advocating for harsher punishment for the same things they do normally.
