16lbs gum drops, 4 jelly beans

The gumdrops sell for $0.95 per pound and the jelly beans sell for $1.20 per pound. She plans to sell the mix for $1.10 per pound.
If she wants to make money, her "mix" should be 19 lbs of gumdrops and 1 lb jelly beans.

Last try:
.95x+1.2y=20(1.10) AND
x+y=20
so...
.95x=-1.2y+22
x=-1.26316y+22
then..
-1.26316y+22+y=20
-.26136y+22=20
-.26316y=-2
y=7.6
therefore
x+7.6=20
x=12.4
I think there is a slight rounding error on the .26316y
.95x+1.2y=20(1.10) AND
x+y=20
so...
.95x=-1.2y+22
x=-1.26316y+22
then..
-1.26316y+22+y=20
-.26136y+22=20
-.26316y=-2
y=7.6
therefore
x+7.6=20
x=12.4
I think there is a slight rounding error on the .26316y

20(1.10)=.95x+1.2x
the variable for pounds is not the same for each unit cost. they can't both be just x.
paige is actually correct. you need more of the expensive item to weight the average back to 1.1. they are not concerned with making profit. the problem is set up to only work between the values of .95 and 1.2. beyond that, you'll get greater than 20 lbs for one variable and negative pounds for the other.
it's a stupid, not real world type of question b/c no one would take time to mix this into a perfect balance and not sell it for a profit.

.95x+1.2y=20(1.10) AND
x+y=20
so, .95x + 1.2(20-x)=20(1.1)
this comes out to nice even 8 and 12. not sure how you're getting all these decimals.
