This might be an outdoor question but I figured I'd try here first. Looking to buy a lab this spring and trying to find a breeder in Louisiana...preferably SW Louisiana, but in state would be fine. Not a hunter...this would be just a family pet.

What are the benefits of AKC registration?

What is the typical cost of a puppy these days?

Open to any coat color, but do prefer the lighter colored yellow labs.

Anyone deal with a breeder they rally like? I've Goggled a bit but you have no idea who you're dealing with that way, and all of the sites look like they were built in 1997.

Thanks in advance...

They still around? Can't find any info on them on line other than links back to this board.

I know a guy in Deridder who breeds them. I got my old chocolate lab from him and was one of the best dogs I ever owned, until the sorry arse neighbors decided to poison him . Anyways, I'll see for his number when I get home. He hunts them a lot if that matters.

Yeah...saw that one yesterday while searching. I haven't had a dog in years, and was frankly shocked at the prices. Yellows and blacks are $1250.00, chocolates and whites are $1500.00 with full AKC registration.

As a dog buying novice...what is the benefit of an AKC registration? Are the dogs being bread to be more healthy? Assuring a better genetic make-up?

I'm seriously asking... I realize it's a bit of a crap shoot with any living thing, but if I'm going to drop that much money on a pet I'd like to think the additional cost is for a reason that matters to me.

Thanks all...I appreciate the info!

Adopt one from a shelter if its just going to be a family pet.

Adopt, do not breed. Most of these "breeds" are a product of incest somewhere down the line. There are plenty of awesome dogs/puppies that would make a great family dog and have less health problems that are considered mutts. Also, think about the lesson it would teach your kids to rescue something instead of paying hard earned money for a dog that is created in the same concept of Hitler's Aryan race. Just my 2 cents.

Could be great but I'm not ready just yet. It'll be a month or more before we finish the fence in our yard. Really looking more for information at this point rather than a dog this afternoon.

But yeah, I saw the post...thanks.

Honestly, just find a breeder and drop $350 on a dog. You don't need anything special, and to be honest, champion bloodline doesn't mean shite on how a dog will act

Some breeders will guarantee you money back if your dog gets shite like messed up eyes or hip dysplasia

Not against that for any reason...just don't know the pros/cons. Snatchy's Hitler reference not withstanding (all domestic animals at this point are the result of selective breeding), I'm trying to find out the benefits of having a bred "pure" lab versus one that is not.

Not really looking for a debate between those who are pro breeding versus those who are not. Just wondering if there are any benefits to getting a dog from a breeder or any downsides from not. If it's a health issue, then I'd prefer tp pay more upfront to held alleviate potential problems down the road. If's it strictly a status symbol type thing to say you bought from a breeder, then I it's unimportant to me.

That's all it is.

We currently have two labs:

Oldest comes from impeccable blood lines with all the titles and certificates. She has been plagued with medical problems for over half of her life. She is a shite hunting dog and is pretty much terrified of water. I still love her to death though.

Youngest was the runt of a litter without all of the pedigree. She is scrappy and one of the best dogs we've had when it comes to hunting. She'll never quit on a duck and she has a ton of energy.

It's a crap shoot. If its just a family pet, adopt. There's no need to break the bank on a dog that's gonna lay around and play fetch.
