They could, but would prefer not to and won't have to. They'll continue the good old reliable method of getting them hooked on foreign debt, propping up warlords, paying off who they can and having the local gendarmes shoot down anybody who won't take a bribe or objects on general principals.
That's the plan. I'm less certain it will work out for China. The Soviet Union looked like a hegemon in the decade before it fell. China is no more invincible than they were.

Yep. We are now a part of that, and China knows it. It's why we need strong leadership in international politics, not a demented, senile career politician and his legs open sidekick who will give away everything for a buck.
