AFAIK there can be a quantitative difference, not qualitative, and even the former is not really proof unless it indicates a blast above a few hundred kilotons. Are you thinking about fallout instead?

I read the NK bomb was 10 KT, which for a thermonuclear is a pathetic fizzle, unless it's a designed neutron bomb or something. It could have been a boosted fission weapon, but even then, it would still be a fizzle, as 10 KT is easily achieved with fission alone. Hell, 10 KT is pretty small even for a pure atomic bomb. IOW, Lil Kim is squeaking loudly, but that's about it.
