Yeah it's their fault you didn't pay your taxes

You mentioned time in Oklahoma... did you have partial years in both states?
Could be a case of trying to charge you at the Resident calculation rather than the Non-Resident calculation.
If they did something like a fed-state match and you were treated as a LA resident rather than a non-resident they may have calculated higher taxes than you would have paid otherwise.

Happened to me a couple of years ago. The state claimed I owed them $14,xxx.xx. Repeated calls in the early morning were met with a recording that said "due to heavy call volume, we have reached our capacity for the day. Please try again tomorrow." After months of trying, someone figured out the state had not inserted a decimal point. Therefore the $144.78 I had payed was subtracted from the $14,478 they mistakenly claimed I owed. She was correcting the mistake, but the collection efforts continued. After leaving her multiple voicemails, I spoke with someone else, who informed me she was no longer working there. I explained the situation and was told they would investigate, but none of her findings or my documentation was available due to privacy issues. This began several more months of bureaucratic red tape before unapologetically admitting to their error. The money they took was never returned, but was taken off of the following years tax obligation.
Good luck-

I had this problem years ago, for not paying sales tax for a couple wholesale jewelry shows ( Helen Brett ) in which I was a vendor.
If I remember correctly, the amount of money they said I owed was reduced after I looked into it. They use a table to estimate what you owe if you dont provide them with any information. ( not sure how they do this with no base info )

Still haven't gotten my refund for this year. Earlier in the year I got a letter saying my previous years were "under random review". Never had anything crazy happen and all my W-2's were in order so I didn't worry about it. Haven't heard anything but still no refund. Frick the LA gubment

Why would recent graduates want to move to Texas when the great state of Louisiana does things like this for it's residents?
