I think that is a subtle but important difference.
Perhaps, but I read at as no more than word parsing. The main difference between pure abolitionists and "anti-slavery" in the newly formed Republican party was violence and illegality. At that time saying you were an Abolitionist, strongly implied you were assisting freed slaves, fomenting dissension and violence among abolitionists and slaves living in the south, and other matters that were illegal at the time. "Anti-slavery" Republicans were committed to ending slavery as an institution through legal and constitutional channels.
Heck, I myself might have been more of an abolitionist at the time, but this is 150+ years later.

I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been in favor of bringing about in anyway the social and political equality of the white and black races – that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race. I say upon this occasion I do not perceive that because the white man is to have the superior position the negro should be denied everything.
Where did this quote come from?

It's from the Lincoln-Douglas debates in 1858

It came from Lincoln's mouth at the Douglas debate.

Let's not and say we didn't.

My history is very hazy at this point. I hadn't seen that quote before. Perhaps I skipped that day in college too, very possible.

Lol. As if a college would actually teach you shite about history. It's rare to find a teacher who will objectively teach you facts from both sides. I was lucky enough to have one.

That's pretty standard reading even in middle school

I had a great American history teacher actually. I just didn't care.

Sounds like you're not alone in that.

Why blame him for all the future actions that expanded federal power? Is it his fault later presidents took his war time measures and introduced them during peace time?
Oh the irony here... So one can blame slavery for the poor actions/behaviors of black society today, but he can't blame Lincoln for the poor actions/behaviors of government today? Which set of rules are we playing by? We can either blame history or not blame history, but let us be consistent with it.

I wouldn't expect fouldeliverer to acknowledge this post at all.

Or to acknowledge the fact that historically today's party of "acceptance" and "tolerance" was the exact same party who was against integration, and proudly supported slavery and Jim Crow. Hell its very common knowledge the klan was made up of almost all White Southern Democrats, which makes me laugh that the majority of blacks so closely align with that party today. Same party that supplied Woodrow Wilson, who insisted upon a segregated military for fear that black people might take any weaponry or training with them back home to defend themselves against racism. Same party who supplied J William Fulbright, who Bill Clinton fondly refers to as a mentor, who is a well known racist and segregationist that openly opposed Brown vs Board of Education and signed the Southern Manifesto. Gotta love a history book! But wait, are we or are we not blaming history? I forgot... Haha
