Lean works. Just implementing it is impossible.

If pay at a implementation level was attached then it could be done.

True, and what Motorola did was based on the concepts of "statistical process control" developed for Japanese manufacturing after WWII by W. Edward Demming.

I was involved with Lean manufacturing in the early 90's when it become a "thing"

It works well, it is a great idea if you have the right situations and the right people to manage and use it

If not, its just another note on a piece of paper

Man this brings back some memories

Work in manufacturing and use some concepts of it pretty much daily. I am also a trainer.

My employer used to have a training program where after "graduation" you could add "Deming acolyte" to your email signature as a certification.

Oh the good old days when we still manufactured product here in the states.

I use it daily as an analyst for a large financial servicies company. As others have mentioned, the biggest challenge is change adoption. If the organization is committed to change and eliminating waste, then it's worth the investment. If they are going to spend money and then go back to doing what they did before, it's a huge waste of time. Most are unsuccessful because they focus on the process aspect more so then the people involved in the process. I suggest you take a look at the ADKAR model for change management. Pretty simple concepts, but it can work wonders when trying to implement large scale changes.

Every engineer I know that got dragged into Six Sigma considered it to be a terrible waste of time. And I haven't heard the name mentioned in 5-10 years. So if you want a business fad then there are plenty of newer ones.
