One time I was watching my dog (15 pounds) in the backyard and all of a sudden a hawk came from the sun side. My dog got the Clint Eastwood eyes and ducked down. As the hawk got closer it changed it's mind. But coming out of the sun was a clever trick to surprise it's prey...
Supposedly they won’t go after a dog that size.

I watched a video of a golden eagle going after a mountain goat. It was filmed in Mexico. The eagle made multiple attacks as the goat scrambled up the steep side of a mountain. The eagle finally got the goat in its talons and pulled it off the mountain and dropped it. It was too heavy to fly away with, but a good drop I'm sure tenderized the meat.
Don't underestimate birds of prey.

When I lived in Alaska back in the mid 80s, a classmate of mine lost their family dog to a bald eagle. They’d gone out in their boat one weekend and took their little dog. A bald eagle snatched it right off the bow of their boat.
