This was not an assault on an officer," said Joy Nelson, spokesperson for the Bluffton Police Department.

Lindsey Gibson is the school resource officer at May River High School. Police say she was riding her bike on the track to assist a criminal justice class with physical training.

"The student that threw the ball at Officer Gibson did not mean any ill-intent against Officer Gibson. Officer Gibson actually knows this student personally," Nelson said.

After the incident, Officer Gibson did not file a report, according to the Bluffton Police Department.

"She knows the student had no intent of hurting Officer Gibson. It was a horseplay unfortunately that went wrong," Nelson said.

Bluffton police officers want the hundreds of thousands of people who viewed the video to know they have a strong support system in the community.

"Officer Gibson has moved on. Luckily, Officer Gibson was not injured in this incident and we'll move on from here," Nelson said.

WJCL 22 News reached out to the Beaufort County School District to see if the student faced disciplinary action, but district officials say privacy laws prohibit them from discussing such matters.
