dont let the typical photos of Kennedy fool you
He had Addison's disease and required cortisone injections. There are photos of him when this wasn't managed and he looks a lot different.
I suppose Nikita was more responsible for it?

and how many nukes were thrown around during that time? (non-testing)

Russia didn't need Cuba to throw nukes at us at any time though. They did manage to get us to pull our missiles from their border. Advantage them

You don't think they put them there to force our hand in Turkey/Europe? Can I play poker with you?

An even better argument can be made that Kennedy screwed up so badly with his meddling in the Cuban revolution that it left Russia licking it's chops to get in bed with Cuba

So you'd have just been cool with Russia having nukes 90 miles off our coast? Just done nothing at all huh?

Nukes were always off our coast in their subs

Well to be fair to Kennedy, the Bay of Pigs invasion planning was done by the Eisenhower administration, Eisenhower just didn't get to see it through.

You're right but Kennedy ordered it so it ultimately falls on his shoulders.

Yeah and we always had nukes close to Russia as well. What's the point?

as were our subs off theirs, we used to to run sorties of nuke armed fighters supersonic from McDill right down to Cuban airspace at least daily that would turn at the precise point as to not enter "their" airspace, it was a poker game, neither side knew exactly what the other side had or whether they would use it, I'd say we came out ok, and look at the technology gained

Which caused Kennedy to not put all his trust in the JCOS, which is a good thing. Because if he would've listened to them, we'd have gone to war during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Russia is pretty landlocked in the west and we surrounded their navigable routes to the ocean with Nato countries. It's the only reason Turkey is Nato. We monitored all of their sub movements. We had two oceans as a buffer zone and they were surrounded by our missiles. They went all in and got some breathing room out of it.

I think going all in would mean throwing nukes over to us. You're right, they did get some breathing room out of it, but we were in the driver's seat throughout the entire Cold War.

That was probably the height if the cold war. After the missile crisis it became a proxy war. They got us in Vietnam and we paid them back in Afghanistan.

You're being purposely obtuse, right? What I'm saying is Russia knew the USA had a massive military advantage - especially naval - that close to the continental US. They weren't going to war over missiles in Cuba. But they also knew JFK was an Obama-level empty suit and would fold his cards at the first bluff. What do we want? Missiles removed from Turkey. How do we get them out? Put missiles in Cuba and use them as leverage. With the US press playing cheerleader for all things Camelot the Russians knew a quid pro quo would be painted as a Kennedy diplomatic triumph, while they are laughing behind their stack of chips. They got two things, a guaranteed Communist Cuba and missile free Turkey while JFK got basically nothing. We could have militarily removed the missiles AND Fidel with minimal effort and there was nothing the USSR would have done about it.
If you think the missile crisis was a JFK triumph then you must think the Munich accords were a masterstroke for Chamberlain.

I didn't say that it was a JFK triumph. I didn't even allude to it, I asked a question, which was who should get most of the commendations for not allowing an already pretty volatile situation to expand.
Also, who cares about Communist Cuba? They couldn't beat us militarily or economically, we completely shut down any trade we ever had with Cuba after that. So big whoop, they got a weak country under their wingspan, we averted nuclear war. They got all their missiles off the island and we took ours out of turkey. They still had subs floating around our eastern seaboard and we still had nukes pointed at them all throughout Europe and had subs all around their waters too.

I posted this in a Cuban Missile Thread before, but this guy is an unsung hero as important as either leader in preventing nuclear holocaust.
Vice Admiral Vasili Alexandrovich Arkhipov was one of three officers aboard the B-59, a Russian sub that was being depth-charged in an effort by the US Navy to surface her for identification.
Not knowing if war had already broken out or not, two of the three officers aboard had approved the launch of a Nuclear-tipped torpedo, but Russian Navy protocol required the approval of all three, and Arkhipov was the lone dissenter.
He was also the Captain of the infamous K-19 later portrayed by Harrison Ford the The Widowmaker.

I wonder what would've happened if they could've gotten in touch with Moscow.
