Pryor and Carlin focused on topical comedy. They didn't tell jokes per se. They made observation about political and social conditions of the time. Of course their material seems dated and irrelevant given the passage of time.
If you want timeless comedy, go with some of the classic joke tellers like Rodney Dangerfield or Jack Benny.

Jack Benny.
And George Burns, for that matter - those are different kinds of cats - more in line with Mel Brooks.
And I said the other day that the Jack Benny Show and George and Gracie will be funny long after we're gone.

Lenny Bruce paved the way for the GOAT Richard Pryor and Carlin and all the rest.

Pryor was hilarious. Loved his stuff much better than Eddie Murphy.
Stand up? I agree Pryor is better , but Murphy is a better Comedic actor(all around talent) .
I don't know if Pryor simply had inferior scripts ,but many of his movies fell flat.
Murphy was brilliant enough to elevate mediocre scripts.

Pryor was notorious for not giving a frick about acting in most of his movies. He was a nightmare for directors, producers, other actors, etc. Mainly because he was strung out as shite for the most part of his prime. He could have been so much better.

Thanks for the info.
I may go on amazon & find a good biography on Pryor ,but his life seems so depressing/dark(drugs, domestic abuse,etc..).
I didn't know whether it was bad/mediocre scripts that he could not elevate or him going through the motions for a paycheck. Whatever it was Murphy came across better on Film.
Makes sense though since Murphy hasn't done stand up in over 30 years(?) it's obvious film was what he concentrated on.
Pryor like Carlin ,Jay Leno, Seinfeld ,Rivers , etc were/are stand ups at heart & will have to be carried off stage no matter how much money they have.
Murphy is disinterested in stand up.
