Some advice ... I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, I promise. Take it fwiw.

Money getting tight as in paying your essentials? Essentials to be paid for are only in this order > 1) roof over your head, 2) electricity 3) water ... you have these, you are in great shape!

Credit cards and other consumer debt can sit for now.

Always pay your rent/mortgage first. You can get by the other stuff for a long time and not lose it. When you get kicked out of your house, it's bad -- not embarrassment bad so much but because you're out in the elements with a lot of people who just refuse to pay for a place to stay (who tf does that? but I digress) -- not a good situation.

Food you can get for free and get it anywhere. Go eat at your daughter's, at a church or with some other friends. Here, don't ever be ashamed to ask for something to eat. Everyone will be only too happy to help out with that especially if you are in the South (and anywhere else in the country really). Food is cheap af. Hell, even the homeless in this country are overweight.

After rent, keep the lights on and the water running. Park your car a few streets over if you're worried they'll come and get it. Or keep it in a garage if that's an option. Best thing to do for essential consumer debt issues, call your creditors! They want to help you (unless you've fricked them over time and again) and will work on a payment plan rather than pick up your stuff.

Anyhoo, when you get back to work and on your feet, I suggest looking into Dave Ramsey's view on money and how to prepare for hard times and how to prosper. It's a no-brainer. Helped me out about 12 years ago. I now have extra cash in the bank and could handle *any* emergency. It's amazing how when you set aside money for an emergency, you stop having them.

And if you happen to be worried about shame or embarrassment, get over that shite now. Yes, we are where we are because of decisions we make, but we make bad decisions so we can learn. Anyone who hasn't done that is actually worse off than the person who has. The key is to just learn as you go. God bless bro.
