For the most part it always has been. Not us, obviously but specifically US business interests and collaborative industry. We've always been an economic bully. If countries don't open their economy to US business interests, they sick the military and the Goons in the CIA and the NSA on them.

Countries with resources or customers aren't allowed to be isolationists in regards to the US unless they carry a big stick to ward us off.

This is part of the reason why countries like North Korea and Iran hold fast to their nukes.
