I worked with an O&G company from Louisiana as a co-op for a semester. They offered me another position for an internship this summer 750 miles away from Baton Rouge. I have another employer from Baton Rouge offering me an internship but half the pay. Is it in my best interest to stick with the first O&G company with a much greater pay to move away for the summer or pick an engineering firm and get my name out to more than one company? I am a Junior at LSU and know how hard it can be to get into the plants but also fear to not get my name out to more than one company.

If it's with a Shell, Exxon or Marathon then go do your internship.

You did a good job, it will most likely pull an offer.

Sometimes you take less pay when you are young for better experience or resume builders. We all did it when under 25. The money will come later down the road.

It actually was with one of those you mentioned. They really liked me and offered me the OOS offer for the summer. However, the firm in Baton Rouge would let me stay close to home to take summer classes on top of work plus get my name out more.

See what it’s like to live and work somewhere else’s than your home town.

Internships are a great way to figure out what you don’t like. This avoids wasting years hating your job.
A job from a big operator doesn’t fall from trees even if you have a high GPA. Their full time pay and benefits won’t be matched except by upstream operations. Moving away for an internship might help you land a full time job closer to home. Consider what the local firm has to offer over the big operator. Unless you hated in the first summer or don’t want to work oil and gas, I would stay with the big operator. Having a big operator on your resume for several years trumps “getting your name out there” and allows you to pick any job that’s hiring your senior year.
