It's because we've become a "credentials" society, whereby everyone only wants the outcome and the status it garners. They don't give a flying frick about the actual process or experience.
Lots of people don't care about visiting another country. They just want everyone to know they visited another country.
They don't care about watching the football game. They just want everyone to know they went to the football game.
The same thing is happening with education. Lots of people don't actually care about becoming educated. They just want the diploma/degree/whatever so they can go ahead and put it on their resume and get a job with it.

This is so true. Something I value in other people is when I can tell someone actively chooses to learn outside the confines of school or pushes their own education in school further. It's so obvious to tell when people are basically just memorizing what the professor tells them to spit it back out on a test and then pass.
