The Big man knows when you are sincere and when you are not. If you are truly repentant he knows. Same if you are just trying to get out of jail free with no real intent of trying to better. Even in that scenario, he will know if you truly mean it or not.
Truthfully, I'm always trying to get right with him as I am a sinner just like every other human is.
