About 20 years ago, I caught one almost that big, but not quite. It was crossing the road at a little bridge just off the Wheeler Wildlife Refuge in North Alabama.
I had a shovel in the back of my truck, and I was just keeping him in the road and trying to figure out how to get him in my truck, when a friend of mine came along.
He asked what I was going to do with it, and I told him that I was going to sell it to a man we knew.
He had a sheet of plywood in the back of his truck, and we pushed the monster on to the plywood, and then we both picked it up and flipped it into the back of my truck real fast.
The old thing was missing an eye and all scarred up, he was a fighter all the way.
On the way to sell it, I had to stop and get some gas, While I was putting in, I was kind of leaning against the truck, and had my hand just atop the side of the bed.All of the sudden I felt the truck shaking and heard a rumbling and banging.
I moved my hand just in time, this thing actually tried to climb up on my fender well and bite my hand, he almost got me too.
Well, I took him to the man, and I think he gave me 30 dollars for it.
Me and the guy that helped me bought some beer and whiskey and got drunk on my back porch.

LDWF is wanting to get some protection for them. A good thing for such a unique creature

I agree with that, and If I had it to do over again now, I would have let that old turtle go on. People change.

use to see much smaller ones in LSU lake. I use to be all over that place.
Some of the guys I lived with pulled an 81 lb out of the lakes. Tasted good.
