I think if they haven't eaten in a while and you have open wounds it is a much higher likeilhood they bite you. But even then, a swarm devouring you in 5 minutes as I feared as a child is a complete myth. You'd be able to withstand a bunch of them biting you as you crossed the river, just cover your dick and balls.

While they aren't technically wrong, piranhas are so overrated as a threat it isn't even funny.
