How possible or impossible is it to transition from the reserves to active as an officer?

A good friend of mine that I served with is planning to commission in the reserves and go active duty in a couple years, once he picks up O2 or O3.

I told him that I don’t think it’s very likely or possible given the military numbers game at the moment but he won’t hear it.

It’s not impossible but it’s unlikely. The only way is via Call to Active Duty. Quite recently they have been doing a lot of Call to Active duties but by the time he’s eligible it will have slowed down unless some shite kicks off

Depends what your job is. It was a lot easier 5 years ago.

Depends on the branch.

The Army had a big push in the last two years or so for Company-grade Officer to transition to AD. However, that only happens every once in a while.

There's no way your buddy could time when they will require that again. He just has to get lucky, and if he's claiming to have something more going for him, other than luck, he's bullshitting himself.

supply and demand, one thing is for sure though, if his name isn't in the hat it will not happen

Marine? If so, not likely to happen. Perhaps in the active reserve program but even there, it's mostly active to active reserve transition. If he does get assessed into the active duty, he'll be limited in his promotion potential. Very hard to compete against someone with a full time record vs his prior part time record. We assessed a lot of reservists after the gulf war due to the fact we drew down too many. Most of those guys topped out at O4 if they were lucky.

Edit. Read that wrong. If he goes into the reserves he will have to fulfill that contract. Shouldn't be hard to go active because officer, but might be.

Most services have and RC-to-AC coordinator. Your friend needs to contact this person. However, acceptance depends on whether-or-not his designator (MOS/rate for enlisted) is needed in the active component.

Would he keep his rank as well? Have a hard time believing he would.

I wish I could find it now. But I saw a picture of an old retired vet wearing a t-shirt that said something like “Officers: turning simple shite into difficult shite since 1775”.

when I was in hs during the VN war and my buddies would come home they would say, first of all, don't go, but they would all joke about wondering whose side the young new Lts. were on, I got the impression that more than a couple succumbed to "friendly fire," for the good of the cause, you know

For every good officer there are at least 10 retards. These guys graduate from service academies and you wonder how some of them are able to tie their shoes.

What's even funnier about that shirt is that it leaves off AF and CG

I hadn't noticed but yeah, you right. You can tell he doesn't take no shite from anybody.
