What is your queation?

The lyric seems to say that he learned to speak Standard English rather than Southern English -- the implication being that's what's required for success, to suppress your Southern-ness. Yet ironically he celebrates the south in other parts of the song.

Irony?

I always took it to mean that he went through a time where he felt he needed to get out, but that in the end he is what he is, of which a major part is being southern in those ways.

and ive been all over the south, and it sucks. THats where the black people are really lazy, and the white people are equally as lazy, but they're mad at the black people for being so lazy.
