I read the book the Looming Tower. Some of you might have seen the docuseries, but if you are not familiar this is a description from wiki.
What I got from this book is that the extremist, who do not like the west, are trying to spread Islam throughout the west. They don't need them to be extremist yet, they just need Muslims who could become extremist. They are in a religious war with the west. It will never be called that, but they absolutely want to spread Islam and they can't do it by trying to convert people in the West. You have to start with small communities.
Although they will not succeed overall, it will not stop them from trying. And the thing about them is that there is no timetable. Its an ongoing war to them. And there is little reasoning with people committing extreme acts for something in their mind is bigger than them.
They come here for the education our universities provide to them so in my opinion that's one way to keep them out. Muslims living outside of the US should not be allowed to attend our universities, but that will not happen.. and I know all the die hard Trump fans don't want to here this, but it doesn't help that the president of the US is flown around in an airplane bought by Muslims. Obviously they are not all extremist, but you never know if there is ever an extremist among those who are not.

The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11 is a 2006 nonfiction book by Lawrence Wright. Wright examines the origins of the militant organization Al-Qaeda, the background for various terrorist attacks and how they were investigated, and the events that led to the September 11 attacks.[1][2]
The book was a New York Times best-seller and won a number of awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction. A ten-episode television miniseries adaptation aired in 2018 on Hulu.
