SMU and TCU are pretty damn good schools and both are absolutely stuffed to the gills with hot rich girls. If you can afford to go to one of the two, you probably shouldn't scoff at it. Holding out for a better opportunity might mean losing the one you have and not getting a better one. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

For going the landman route, though, I think going to an SEC school like LSU would be a good choice. Their geology department is pretty solid, and a degree in that would make you stand out to a law school a lot more so than a another history major. Also, out of state tuition at LSU is likely less than 1/4 of what you would be paying at SMU for undergrad, so you can take those savings and apply them to law school. If you do well at LSU in undergrad, you could likely get into UT for law school.

May only need one or two semesters to get back into LSU, I doubt they would let me in still though. I have a few semesters of great grades before I can get into SMU or TCU, I would absolutely go there right now ifI I could get in, but if I do one or two semesters after that I may have a pretty good shot at UT.

I'll probably end up majoring in econ/business though, just cause I won't have much backup if I do history.

Business majors are a dime a dozen. I'd echo the advice of others in this thread and go with geology or some sort of ag/forestry major. Remember: it is far far easier and far far cheaper to get into LSU than Texas, SMU, or TCU. Texas A&M may not be a terrible option to look into as well.

A friend of mine had dropped out of Southeastern Louisiana after a semester of dicking around. He later got an associates degree from a for-profit technical college, but the system folded, and the credits and grading system wouldn't transfer. He only needed 1 year of 4.0's at the local community college in order to transfer into LSU and major in Physics. It's not that hard. You can do it if you want, and LSU's geology department has as good of contacts in the oil industry as any. In fact, I interviewed for a land man position with Chevron just a couple years ago.

If being a land man is what you want, I would go LSU simply due to the ease of getting in, the low cost of a degree, and quality of career connections. I really liked the professors in the geology department, to boot. I almost switched my major to geology, but decided on Construction Management instead.

If you're looking for a more business-focused degree, don't sleep on a Construction Management degree from LSU. It is highly practical, hands on, has unparalleled alumni support, and great career prospects. It will prepare you with the people and paper-chasing skills needed fro navigating Law School, assuming your reading and writing is already solid. That's what I did, and I'm now in my 3rd year at LSU Law.

If you do CM, make sure to involve yourself heavily in the student association. They network, tailgate, and drink like champs, and their mentorship program with CIAC (Construction Industry Advisory Council) will all but guarantee you internship possibilities if you have a modicum of aptitude and the least amount of humility and personality. The alumni sponsor a lot of events, often renting out patios of bars with free drinks and apps for students at least once every semester. There's even a competition team that travels. Oh, and there will be twice as many attractive girls in your CM classes than in all other engineering disciplines at LSU combined.
