Since we didn't call them 'whips' in the '80s, this was non-essential equipment.

Airbrushing entire truck tailgates was big in the late 80's too.

My sister had one with her and her BFs name. At the time I actually thought it was a cool thing to do. I thought "one day, I'll have a car and a girlfriend and everyone will know about my girlfriend"

If your girlfriend bought one for you and you wanted to continue sex regularly with that girlfriend, then it was essential. I swear my GF at the time equated this to some kind of long term commitment like an engagement ring. Yes she was a bit crazy, hence the sex regularly was worth the airbrush plate, and the clear protective cover I purchased myself to keep it looking clean
