Look at the EPA figures for gasoline vapor concentrations when pumping. They are well below the 'lower explosive limit'--basically too lean to burn. This supposed risk is basically a myth.

So unless somebody spills gas on the ground and you drop your cigarette into it or something, you're more likely to get killed driving through the next intersection.

Exactly. If there are enough gasoline fumes in the air to ignite then you'd have trouble breathing while standing there.
