Pretty common tbh. The waiter will cut it and serve also. I would let the restaurant know beforehand though

Not trashy especially if the restaurant doesn't bake cakes. If its a restaurant where you have to make reservations for a large party give them some heads up so they dont schedule within the normal alloted time. If they normally reserve and they may may eant to reserve 1 1/2

To be sure, call ahead. Restaurants usually accommodate and will bring it out for you and all that garbage.
