Home survey question?

We bought our house 9 years ago and have a big folder with all of our stuff that we never really looked at. We are looking to add on and will need a variance from the city to do so. Both contractors we met with so far have said we will need a survey to proceed any further but there is not one in our folder of stuff.

Is this something I can get through the city that they will have on record or am I going to have to pay to get a new one?
