These two actually significant for yesterday's date!

And for the non-war viewers... Who is in the chair?

Another significant date: 07 AUG 1942. The United States Marines went ashore on an island named Guadalcanal. No body had ever heard of it, and many will never forget it.

Let's get this going for Darth. Make/model/what makes it different than the normal model?

Is that a flamethrower tank?

Joe Basilone.
He's one of the central characters in HBO's The Pacific
Got the MoH on Guadalcanal and was later killed on Iwo Jima (where he also earned the Navy Cross).

That's the CSS Arkansas and USS Essex.
They fought each other twice on the Mississippi river during the civil war.

John Basilone, but everything else is correct.

Right. The Battle of Baton Rouge (1862) was on August 5th. The Essex assisted in repelling the Confederate ground attack. The Arkansas was planned to engage the Federal fleet to forestall that support, but due to engine failure the crew scuttled the Confederacy's most effective ironclad (not far from where I live!).

'Manila' John Basilone. He got the moniker from an earlier stint in the US Army in the Philippines before he joined the Marine Corps.

No sir..
It is a M5 light tank modified with a 75mm howitzer. The length of the barrel is very short.

First MoH winner to return to active duty and be killed...he was a testament to that generation

Continuing with Gaudalcanal (only in that the image is from there), what is this and whose?
Posted on 8/7/14 at 8:34 am to Spaceman Spiff
Morning all.
That's an American M8 self propelled howitzer. It's based on the M5 Stuart light tank. Basically they took a M5 hull and replaced it's fully enclosed turret that had 37mm anti-tank gun and replaced it with an open top turret that had a 75mm pack howitzer.

Hard to tell but I think that's a Japanese Type 97 light tank. I can't really see the turret very well but the cylinder just above the three middle road wheels tells me that's a Type 97.

Good for the most part. Got a busy weekend ahead and rain coming in though.
How about yourself?
