Wouldn't be Vietnam, would it?

Lewis Nixon
Jumped at Normandy, Market-Garden and served at Bastogne - never fired a shot, never got a scratch. He was an observer with the 17th when they jumped into Germany.
Finished the war - never fired a shot, never got a scratch - some guys are just like that.
ETA: There were only a handful of guys, perhaps less than 10 or 12 that made all 3 jumps.

Correct.

they had a combat jump into Germany.
Correct again. They're the only American division that can make this claim.
Operation Varsity

Oh, now I remember the scene where he talked about that.

He was one tough SOB. Made some incredible shots. His story reads like something that would be unbelievable. Like how he crawled - what, 1500 yards? - to kill that NVA officer. Or shooting that sniper through the scope. He was severly injured when the M113 APC he was riding on was hit by a mine. He went on to be a sniper instructor. I wish I could have taken some shooting lessons from him!

He also held the record for the longest kill shot in history until recently.

Wasn't that recent one done with an aid (I can't think of the correct term, but with computing devices?)??? If so, thats still an awesome shot but I take Hathcock's over that for pure skill.

Here's my CSB.
Fallujah, 2004, I was with a 60mm mortar section. Our company's sniper had been sent to find an enemy mortar team that had been hammering us for a while and had wounded my platoon commander and radio operator along with several others. I received a call from the sniper requesting an immediate fire for effect on the target. He wanted my mortar rounds to land a few seconds after he took his first shot. His shot ended up being 1,050 yards with the M40. Which I believe is the longest shot with something not a .50 cal. At the time it was the longest shot taken in Iraq. After the mission I looked at my map and figured out that it was only about a 450 meter shot with my mortars.
Sgt. Byron Hancock
Here's the best link I could find to the story. It was on the cover of the Marine Corps Times.

ETA: There was no computer assistance in his sniper shot or with my mortars. All done the old fashioned way.

I saw something on TV about it. I remember that it was a Canadian sniper who used a Humvee to prop his rifle on. Don't remember it saying anything about him having a computing device but it could have.
And as for Hathcock's long kill shot. From what I've been told he got his not with a sniper rifle but instead a M2 .50 cal MG with a sniper scope on it like this...

Didn't Hathcock make some 1000+ yard shots with the Model 70?
I remember reading that in his book. Put a scope on that thing and lightly touched one off. Still, not bad...

I'd have to read up more on him. I'm not sure.
Here's a tricky one...
What unit insignia is this?
Hint: It ain't German, nor is it Finnish.
Posted on 7/23/14 at 2:52 pm to Darth_Vader
Marine Corps colors.
That's not the Codetalkers patch is it?
I can't imagine the US letting a unit get away with that during the war.

No... But you're not too far off from where this patch came from.

This unit changed their patch just before the start of the war.

Damnit! Wish I would have been in here when you posted this. My Dad had his picture in his office when I was growing up.
