I think it was a low production model - Ta 152 or Ta 154 - the Mosquito, I think they called it

Bingo. It was a Focke Wulf Ta 154.

That B-17 is painted as such because it was a formation aircraft. They would use brightly colored war weary planes to form on, and it would return to base after the formation was ready.

Ding ding ding. They called them "assembly ships" and they came in a wide variety of paint schemes...

It is indeed a Ju-86P high altitude recon/bomber. The appearance is a long way from the original Ju-86.

It could reach and altitude of almost 50,000 feet - higher than modern airliners and was thus immune from both fighters and AAA. They conducted nuisance raid until the RAF got tired of them and modified some Spitfires for high altitude flight. Once a couple got shot down the Germans stopped the flights.

What makes the Ju-86P unique is the reason I posted the engine close up. They aren't turbines, they're diesels. You can count the number of diesel powered WW2 combat aircraft on one hand with fingers left over.

Here is an image from a famous mission. Name the plane type, place, and name of the operation.

I've got about an hours worth of work left to being done with the Accurate Miniatures Avenger kit I'm working on now.

Just have to finish the ball turret, touch up some paint here and there and apply the decals. Not sure what I'm going to start on next. My son wants me to build a Tiger I kit that I've had sitting in my stack for a while now.

That's a B24 during the Operation Tidal Wave 1943 bomb raid of the Polesti (sp?) oil refinery.

Early Pe-8s, the Yer-2, and the Bv-138 were the only others.

I know they called it Black Sunday or something because they lost so many bombers.

Have built a couple of Accurate Miniature's kits and they are nice. As I said earlier, I have an Avenger in the stash that needs attention. Am almost ready for paint on this one:

I have the decals for this one (for those that don't know, that is Spaceman Spiff)

They lost more bombers on that mission than any other mission of the war.... and that's saying something.

I knew they lost a lot there, but I have never looked at the numbers. I always thought the Schweinfurt (sp?) mission where they lost around 60 or so.

I love Tamiya. To me they make some of the best kits on the market. Not sure why but I rarely build jet aircraft, preferring to build WWII prop aircraft instead. I do have this kit in my stack though...

My son bought it a couple years ago while out wit his grandmother and now I've inherited it because it's too complicated for him. I'll get to it eventually but I've got about 4 or 5 in front of it.
