If you have a safe deposit box and don't pay the fee, then after a specified time the bank has to send the contents to the State just like unclaimed deposits. Then the State has to hold them for a time, after which they can sell the contents and treat the proceeds like an unclaimed account.

There was a notable such case in Texas where the proceeds were returned to the family of Aubrey Hawkins, the officer murdered by the Texas 7.

Sure, but those are physical goods in that box. It's no different (on a much smaller scale) from sticking some poor dude with a barge full of piping hot asphalt he doesn't want- in which case you'll definitely incur demurrage.

Money's a different story. Banks don't get antsy if they have too much of it.
