The great thing about technology is that online "social structure" really only exists in the mind of the user, and allows for as much participation as you want.
Danger comes when online relationships which rarely mimic real world social interactions become the standard.

The excerpt of the article says that kids used to hang out on party lines and now they use snapchat. It's just modern technology.

Seriously?
You have no more clue about what old people grasp than you do about the social development among twelve year olds in the article.
Only slightly tangential, for every 30 minutes of handheld screen use daily by very young children, there is a 49% increased chance of excessive speech delay. Constant screen time is bad for toddlers, too.
