I don't know if it was the same way before... But I know from at leas the mid 90s to the early 2010s you could be cool with different people from different groups. Then people started to identify themselves more with their politics and all of a sudden that gay hippie gas station worker hates those who look like they are from the right.. Those from the right hates the gas station worker because they are one of the alphabet people. People turned into idiots.
