I started lurking on here in early 2004, right before signing day. Back then there wasn't very many people and to be honest, it kind of felt like you had hacked into a private network and was reading people's personal posts. Since the site was small, a lot of the posters back then seemed to know each other and called each other by name. They often spoke as if they had all got drunk the night before and were just continuing the banter.

The posting was pretty hard core back then and they didn't take kindly to newcomers. So I didn't bother signing up till 2007 when it seemed like more people were on here and you had a little safety in numbers. I agree with Rouge that 2005 to 2009 were the Golden years. Prior to 2005 there wasn't enough traffic. After 2009, the influx of non LSU people started coming in and the conversations got away from talking sports and personal insults, to continuous flaming and personal insults.

In that window of time, it seemed liked most people on here got along and talked sports. But they also talked about personal aspects of each other and generally got along. Even fans of other schools that were posting here, seemed to have at least a general interest in LSU and talking sports. Then once all the Bama fans started flooding the Rant, the SEC Rant was created to get them off the LSU boards and give them there own place to troll each other.

It is what it is, but every now and then you'll come across an anchored thread where some old timers have found a hiding spot to carry on somewhat private conversations, like the old days. They used to not have to hide in threads like they do now, so I suppose that's some of the lore of old.
