If it's a screw then it's not too big. I've pulled screws, nails, and random metal slivers from tires and used plugs with no problems.
The only time I ever came across a tire that couldn't be plugged was when my friend ran over a pair of needle nose pliers.

I have horrible luck in this arena. Majority of the nails in my tires were always in the sidewall and that couldn't be fixed. This one is in the tread so I should be good to go. I mean, the firestone man will be good to go.
