If you look at the demographics of the combat arms they are overwhelmingly white and middle class. It's even more pronounced when you look at special operations forces. Basically, the more elite a unit is, the more white and male it is. Minorities are over represented in support units.

Assad does have some well-trained forces (for instance, Tiger Forces), but as a whole, they are not well-trained and they certainly aren't "specialist killing machines"
