One of the two springs broke. Any idea on the cost to replace something like that?

UPDATE
I followed advice and watched some youtube videos after making a call to two repair places to find out it is almost treefiddy to get a spring changed. Was quoted at least $300 for 2 springs changed. I bought the springs from North Shore commercial door for $99 including shipping and two winding bars. Took me about 45 minutes total this morning including watching step by step instructions on youtube.

If you have a strong neighbor to help you out, the cost of the springs and about a half hour. I've replaced all 4 of mine. I go ahead and replace the pair on a single door when one breaks.

Garage door is one of those things I don't want to mess with. Good chance I'll injure myself.

Should be about $150 (or less).

Go buy the torsion spring and two bars to wind the spring. Took me about 35 minutes after watching a youtube video a month ago.

I would only be concerned if I was standing there when a spring broke. Actually replacing isn't that bad.

It will be less than that... had to do that at my place earlier this year. Under $200 if I remember correctly.

Spring broke when the door was down. Only one of the two broke I don't know what all is involved with changing one of those out. I know there is a lot of torque on those things.

Is there more than one type of spring for replacement?

That's probably best. One of mine snapped when it was in motion. A piece went flying across the garage.

You'll have to buy them by weight of your door. Mine is an older single wood door so it is fairly heavy. Newer aluminum door aren't as bad.

Get a long 2x4, raise the door up, and prop it up with that. Put another one on the other side as well. After that it is just removing the springs and replacing. Once the door is raised, most of the tension is off of the springs, and it is held up by the opener on the track. The springs just assist in lifting the door.

What you want to do is run a thin cable inside the spring and tie it off at both ends, and that way when it breaks again years down the line, the spring won't go flying across your garage. The hardest part is stretching it enough to get the pulley attached. That's where my strong neighbor came into play. He grabbed the spring with some vice grips and pushed it towards me and I bolted the pulley into place. Check out youtube.

No more than $200.00. I used to run a repair truck and we charged $150.00 unless you paid cash and then it was $100.00. Thats parts and labor. Takes about 20 minutes.

Door will still go up with the one spring with a little help. Don't use the opener until fixed as it will strip the gear inside. Both springs will be replaced and that is normal. You don't just replace one. You replace both. Although you can get a stronger spring that will do the job by itself , rather than paying for the 2 smaller springs.

My door is a double car door made of aluminum. How do I determine the right spring? Can I get it from lowes or HD?

This does not apply at all if you have torsion springs. Springs that sit above the top of the door. If you have springs that run along side of the horizontal track , have someone change to torsion springs. Or , older doors only , if they're at the foot of the door on both sides .

Its steel not aluminum and typically box stores won't sell the springs. You'll need to find a door distributor or better yet get on eBay. Youll need a winding bar as well if they're torsion springs.

Eta....On the eBay when looking for springs , most sellers give you directions on how to count the coils on the old spring to find what size you need

Correct. This tells you which is the left hand spring and which is the right hand spring. They will only work correctly if wound the correct direction. Also the paint mark , when dome winding , will tell.you how many compete turns are in spring. Usually 7 turns or 28 qtr turns for a 2 car 16x7 standard steel door
