The video in the OP is old school British sump diving. Not representative of all cave diving, more of a specialized subset. Here in FL we have some small mucky stuff, but also many huge cavernous spaces with white walls and crystal clear water. And in some places, like Mexico, Belize, and the Bahamas, they are crystal clear and highly decorated with stalagmites and stalagtites. Floating effortlessly and silently through air-clear water, observing fossils and rock formations and little albino and blind critters...underwater caves are a very special place.

I’ve gone shark diving, great white cage diving, night diving, and cave diving. Only cave diving has given me severe anxiety
I was a nervous wreck for the first 20 minutes but was finally able to calm down and enjoy the dives. There’s something claustrophobia-inducing about knowing if something goes wrong, you can’t just swim up to the surface. But it did end up being a neat dive, and we did get to surface in a bat cave which was really cool.

quote:Cool dive spot. That’s where I took my “open water” dives to get certified after taking the classes/pool dives on the Northshore. We were supposed to do our open water dives in Destin, but a hurricane was on its way, and we opted for Vortex Springs instead

I had to just focus on my breathing because my brain was running wild. I might have even sung Dory’s “just keep swimming” to myself at one point
After some time, though, I was able to relax and really enjoy the dive. If you can get over that initial feeling of doom, the stalagmites and stalactites are so cool to swim among. And yes, I am choosing to end that sentence with a dangling preposition.

I am full cave certified, trimix, rebreather, blah blah... "focusing on not-dying" stuck with me for a long time. It was actually a bit of a bonus...trust me you totally forget about that crappy client or mean boss when you are just trying not to die.

Ive dove Votrex. and a couple others in florida and mexico. Techincally i have only cavern dived as a true cave dive you legally need cave diving certification. Cavern diving is going into cave where you can still see "AN" opening.
coolest i did was i think it was in Cozumel or Bonaire where you entered a hole in the top of a reef at about 70 feet, crawled through the passage for a while and exited the reef wall at about 120.

I'd rather cobra kangz sleep in my bed with me than to do that.

Oh yeah, now that you mention it, it was a cavern dive. I forgot about the distinction.

ill tell you it wasnt like you werent cave diving. once you get down the pool you entered from looks like a tiny light bulb in the black sky.

Cowboy Cerrone has an intense story about the time he almost died cave-diving on Joe Rogan’s podcast
Kinda long, but a really good listen
