Just to let all you guys know, freon 22 is up over 40% cost wise from the beginning of the year. This is due to cuts in production ordered by the EPA and you can guess who is behind it. Probably 80% of all residential Ac systems still use freon 22 and possibly half of these could have freon leaks depending on field added freon 22. So my advice and recommendation is to call several Ac contractors before they come out to your house for servicing and ask them how much they charge for freon 22 per pound so you are not blindsided!! It would also be wise to watch them weigh in it so you are getting what you pay for. There are going to be continued decreases in production of freon 22 until phased out completely in 2020. The idea is to convert to a supposedly more ozone friendly freon 410a. You can probably expect to pay between $50 and $100 per pound now so be wise and only deal with reputable Ac contractors!!

Its been slated for eradication since 1997, production has been steadily dropping for a decade now. It is to be totally phased out by 2020

Yes it was by Al Gore. But it it now becoming a huge issue by the accelerated reduction in production by the current EPA.
