Generally - yes. Coaxial cable all by itself is good enough to pick up a handful of channels in a metro area. I included this MacGuyver antenna I threw together in another thread recently...
3ft piece of coax + tweezers + ab old socket box = HDTV football viewing when DirectTV went out during a thunderstorm.

You can get HD with a paper clip if you’re close enough to the source. Digital signals don’t work that way.

The signal may be digital but the carrier wave is analog.
