I think that's the most likely explanation. Read somewhere that it was an M1 Carbine shot, which would be a completely stupid choice for someone trying to make it look like attempted murder without actually murdering themself. But the M1 Carbine would be long enough to make shot placement in an attempted suicide - one where you're trying to make it look like an ambush, not butt-in-your-crotch with your mouth on the barrel style - very difficult.
