Flexible Dieting - Thoughts?

So a friend of mine was talking with me yesterday about flexible dieting, and I'm thinking of trying it out. Wanted to see if there were some on here with positive or negative experiences with it.
Basically, you are counting your macros (fat, protein, and carbs) as well as your calories and you're trying to hit a certain number for each every day. It doesn't really matter what you eat (hence "flexible"), as long as you are hitting your numbers.
I had my friend work with me on numbers based on my exercise level, body weight, and goals. They are:
Calories: 2,900
Fat: 106g
Protein: 155g
Carbs: 310g (I know this is rather high, but I am a runner so that's why)
Seeing as how everyone on the OT is a health and fitness expert, I was curious as to what people thought of this method.
EDIT: I will still (for the most part) be eating "clean". This is not to LOSE weight, but rather to GAIN it.

Get ready for the onslaught of people saying that calories aren't important and eating "clean" is the way to weight loss.
IIFYM (if it fits your macros) is a very popular diet choice. Do some googling and you get some good topics to read.

I'm sorry but all that tracking is bs. Eat healthier exercise more and stop snacking on junk food.

IIFYM puts too much emphasis on macros and too little on quality. It's pretty frustrating having to count all your numbers throughout the day as well and keep a tally. Eat "clean" and stick with foods that are obviously healthy and provide the best nutrition. I'm 6'1" and a solid 187. I've been this weight for the past 25 or so years by eating right and staying active.

You can easily "eat healthy" and still eat excessive calories and gain weight. Tons of overweight people feel they eat healthy and don't understand why they can't lose weight. Perhaps you are one of them?

Protein is way too high. Drop protein to your body weight and use those protein number for your carbs. If you're a runner, you'll benefit from the extra glycogen.

The tracking can be a pain, but if it has benefits then I'm willing to put in the work.
I eat extremely healthy, I have just never taken the time to count my macros and calories. I don't eat junk food except on a rare occasion. Never drink cokes, don't touch fast food, etc.
I work out 6 days a week.

As I've lived I've tried different weight loss methods. Most have failed because what we think is "healthy" isnt. The success I have had is due to eating less. Not eating past 8pm. No snack food except fruit or granola. I don't drink soft drinks and I exercise 2-3 days a week 20mins at a time. I've lost the weight slow but hey I'm down 40lbs so I'm thinking my way works

I'm trying to gain 15 pounds of muscle and it's ridiculously tough.

You get used to it, and it becomes second nature. And to get a lot more calories in your system, you'll have to throw a pop tart or a scoop of ice cream at the end of the night. Carb dense foods after your workouts; rice, potatoes, etc.

That's all well and good and I'm glad you lost the weight but that doesn't mean that your way is the only way to do it. Tracking calories and macros has worked and is backed by science as opposed to your one anecdotal account.

You've lost weight because you restricted calories. It's that simple. You cut out crap and your daily calories dropped. Flexible dieting just allows you to eat what you want, but stay within your calorie range. Weight loss is calories in vs. calories out. You can use flexible dieting to lose or gain.

I gained 6 pounds of muscle and then sprained my ankle. I had to stop working out and lost all of my gains. I've been trying to gain it back but it just isn't happening.

Because calories consumed vs calories burned isn't a good way to measure weight loss
