DB was in the cockpit before he went in the back for his exit, the pilots had slewed their RMDIs around to make it look like they were on a general heading for Mexico but they weren't, so they, nor he, did not know their precise location, and onboard wind data wasn't a thing back then unless they happened to have a GNS on board, so the Continental dude is blowing a little smoke
